India’s Generational Mindset Shift!

Everyone know that India got independence on Aug 15th 1947. Our average life expectancy was around 32 years and GDP per capita was 3-4 USD. I don’t have to put these figures in perspective, you can pretty much imagine the state of things around then.

Fortunate enough, we are seeing the world in much better condition – every country forming their constitutions, beliefs and order in their respective ways. This doesn’t mean everything is perfect now, at least we are in right direction in some sense. Coming back to India’s story, our ancestors during that time had just single agenda – Survival! In Kenny’s “Professor of Tomfoolery”! show in Austin, he made a great set around the same topic with some deep jokes. Almost everyone agrees that the life then was far more struggling and scary.

Coming the next generation (Gen X), probably our parents if you are millennial – Survival was granted, India was able set its strong foundations under great leaders. They chose democracy, setup constitution and kick-started the journey (again, nothing is perfect – but in right direction). By 1975, India’s life expectancy was around 50 years and GDP per capita was 158 USD. As survival wasn’t a question – FHC (Food-House-Clothing) became a concern. This was the generation that hit working class at the brick of liberalization in 1991. This opened doors to international companies surging the economy. From this period, they never had to worry as their right assets/investments grown in multiples or even exponential if not exaggerating as India grew much faster more than a average individual during this point of time.

Later comes the millennial/Gen Z generation, at this point of time in 2023, India’s average life expectancy is around 71 years with GDP per capita of 2,257 USD becoming the fifth largest economy in the world in terms of GDP. This generation began their life parallel to internet revolution and born in a country growing in massive pace. Although, we haven’t been able to eradicate the FHC problem entirely, but there is a significant chunk whose FHC problems are sorted and started focusing on education, health and fitness, growth and wealth creation. This generation hit working class in early/late 2020. We now have a whole set of different problems compared to past almost appears to be first world problems. This doesn’t mean we are at the pinnacle, there is lot more and we are just the third generation in a independent nation.

It’s just good to remind about our journey as a nation on completing 76 years of independence, as they say it’s not about destination – always about journey.

Peace!
